Why have you got more staff than the Police Authority?
The short answer is because the office does far more than the Police Authority did.
The role of the Police Authority was to hold the Force to account and their office was essentially employed simply servicing a committee. The committee had a cost attached to it obviously.
The PCC has three roles:
To hold the police to account;
To work across the Criminal Justice Landscape to help keep people safe,
To commission services to deliver that requirement.
This is a much bigger workload and requires far more support, hence there are more staff.
Remember the office still costs roughly the same as the old Police Authority, a lot of the staff are employed on temporary contracts, paid for by grants from central government.
An example of those grants are victim services, restorative justice etc.
